Revitalization of a Historic Building into a Boutique Hotel

With Hotel Mikeli, a boutique hotel is emerging in the heart of Hartberg that does not reinvent itself, but transforms “vacancy into vitality.” The listed 19th-century building, formerly home to the König bakery, is being carefully reinterpreted. Preserved structures meet precisely integrated contemporary additions. In between: a green courtyard oasis that feels like a quiet breath – sheltered, urban and precisely the right counterbalance to the city.

Around 40 high-quality rooms are planned within a unified category, while the existing structure with its organically grown layout allows for natural variations in floor plans and spatial proportions.
Our design focuses on harmonious spatial sequences and an atmosphere that does not loudly demand attention – but instead unfolds through materiality, light and carefully placed details.
 

Materiality as Experience – and as Responsibility

A central element of the concept is the consistent integration of resource-conscious solutions – visible, tangible and suitable for everyday use. Recycled tabletops made from textile fibers: Each tabletop transforms reclaimed material into a new, robust surface – PVC-free, durable and recyclable once again. In the breakfast area, acoustic panels made from recycled PET bottles are used. They significantly improve room acoustics while simultaneously supporting the architectural impact of the vaulted ceilings without overshadowing their character.

As a connecting element between old and new, reclaimed parquet flooring in a classic herringbone pattern is planned. This creates an interior that does not need to look “green” to be conscious: the quality lies in its substance – and in the decision not to see beauty and resource responsibility as opposites.
