The Bastei Beisl on Stubenbastei has been a fixture in the heart of Vienna's city center for nearly four decades. Derenko's design task was to give the premises a contemporary flair without losing the beloved charm and typical Viennese style. By removing wall arches and installing a uniform ceiling height, a new sense of openness was created, making the dining room appear significantly clearer and more spacious.
The choice of materials combines classic values with modern accents. Dark oak in a herringbone pattern meets structural tiles reminiscent of the traditional ceramics found in old Viennese apartment buildings. A particular eye-catcher is the bar, which radiates a modern ambiance with its rust-orange tiles while still blending harmoniously into the overall picture. Soft sage green, beige nuances, and solid wood for tables and benches emphasize the down-to-earth values of the establishment, while brass elements provide an elegant finish to the concept.
On the walls, images of the family history and sepia photographs of old Vienna tell of the tavern's deep roots in the first district. Cozy details like cushions mounted on brass rods invite guests to stay and preserve the hospitality for which the house is valued by celebrities and regulars alike. Derenko has succeeded in preserving the soul of the Bastei Beisl while gently leading it into the present.
